COUC 504 is Liberty's graduate course in multicultural counseling. Its centerpiece is a three-part Cultural Immersion Project with a group you know little about: research and media review, participation in two cultural events, and an in-depth interview, each written up as answers to set questions and discussed in a forum, plus five group forums.
Liberty's catalog lists the course as COUC 504 Multicultural Counseling, 3 credit hours; Canvas and the course guide file print it as COUC504.
What COUC 504 covers
The catalog description: This course focuses on the multiple dimensions related to competent multicultural counseling. Major ethnic groups are studied along with the counseling, social justice, and advocacy approaches appropriate to each. In a similar fashion, the overarching cultural context of relationships, including factors such as age, race, gender, sexual orientation, religious and spiritual values, mental and physical characteristics, education, family values, socioeconomic status, and within group as well as between group cultural differences are examined. Theories of multicultural counseling, identity development, pluralistic trends, and systems-oriented intervention strategies (couple, family, group, and community) are considered. Counselor cultural self-awareness and the role of counseling in eliminating biases, prejudice, oppression, and discrimination are emphasized.
The course develops multicultural counseling competence: understanding culture, identity, privilege and oppression, and counseling diverse individuals and families. The texts are Hays and Erford, Developing Multicultural Counseling Competence, and McGoldrick, Giordano and Garcia-Preto, Ethnicity and Family Therapy.
Eight quizzes (360 points) have no guide here. Each week runs Monday to Sunday, and the final week ends Friday.
Textbook named in the published guide: Hays & Erford, Developing Multicultural Counseling Competence (2018). McGoldrick et al., Ethnicity and Family Therapy (2005). Check the current edition in your Canvas section.

How to approach COUC 504
Choose your cultural group in Week 1: one you have little or no experience with, such as a different ethnicity or religion, the elderly in nursing homes, people with disabilities, the homeless or prisoners. You will attend two of its events by Week 6 and interview a member by Week 7.
Contact organizations early to find events and an interviewee willing to talk for an hour.
