Liberty University Online courses grade in points, and in the course guides we read the total is almost always 1,010 points (a few use 1,000). Every assignment carries a point value, and every written assignment is graded against a rubric attached to it in Canvas.
The grade scales
The letter scale is not the same in every course. Across the 252 course guides behind this site, two scales cover almost all of them:
| Scale in the guide | Courses using it | A range |
|---|---|---|
| A = 940 to 1010 | About half of the guides | 940 to 1,010 points |
| A = 900 to 1010 | Most of the rest | 900 to 1,010 points |
| A = 960 to 1010 and other variants | A handful | Check the guide |
With a 940 cutoff, you can lose only 70 points across the whole course and still keep an A, which is less than a single major paper in many courses.
Where the points are
Written assignments carry most of the weight in these fields. In NURS 500, the four research proposal parts and the article critique are worth 600 of 1,010 points; in ACCT 340, forums and papers are worth 1,000 of 1,010; in PSYC 255, quizzes carry 420 points and the three papers 280. Each assignment guide on this site shows the points for that assignment and its share of the course.
How rubrics work
A rubric is a grid. Each row is a criterion (content, organization, sources, APA, mechanics, faith integration where required) and each column is a level of performance with a point range. Two habits pay off:
- Read the rubric before you start, and turn its rows into your outline.
- Before submitting, read each row and find the paragraph that answers it.
Small requirements that cost real points
Word counts, source counts and the faith element are usually stated as minimums. Missing one often costs points on more than one row, because content and sources are graded separately. The checklist at the end of every assignment guide on this site starts with these numbers for that reason.
