NURS 618 is the second nurse educator course in Liberty's MSN, focused on teaching strategies. This site covers its graded writing: a teaching philosophy paper, a teaching with technology paper, two teaching plans, a recorded teaching plan presentation and two forums. The practicum goals and objectives, clinical logs and evaluations are practicum documentation and have no guides here.
Liberty's catalog lists the course as NURS 618 Nurse Educator II: Teaching Strategies, 3 credit hours; Canvas and the course guide file print it as NURS618.
What NURS 618 covers
The catalog description: This course provides students with a variety of teaching strategies and evaluative approaches designed to promote a productive and effective learning environment. Selected teaching learning theories are examined and applied to the role of nurse educator and nursing education practice. Students establish nurse education practicum goals and objectives and are required to obtain a nurse educator preceptor. Practicum hours involve practical observational and hands-on experiences in both the clinical and classroom environments. An educational site affiliation agreement with a student selected approved facility is secured and a practicum contract is developed and established with an approved nurse educator preceptor prior to enrollment in this course; practicum hours are initiated in NURS 618 . Students must meet all pre-practicum requirements prior to enrollment in NURS 618 ; refer to Graduate Nursing Handbook for pre-practicum requirements.
The course examines teaching strategies and evaluation approaches for an effective learning environment, and the teaching-learning theories behind them, applied to the nurse educator role. The texts are Billings and Halstead, Teaching in Nursing; Halstead, Nurse Educator Competencies; and Jeffries, Clinical Simulations in Nursing Education.
The teaching plans are the heart of the course. You develop two, one on a general nursing topic and one on service learning, using the provided worksheet, and in Week 8 you record yourself teaching the general plan in a 10 to 15-minute video. Practicum hours, documented in Typhon, run alongside.
Textbook named in the published guide: Billings & Halstead, Teaching in Nursing (2016). Halstead, Nurse Educator Competencies (2007). Jeffries, Clinical Simulations in Nursing Education (2014). Check the current edition in your Canvas section.

How to approach NURS 618
Choose your general nursing topic for the Week 5 teaching plan with the Week 8 recording in mind: it must be teachable in 10 to 15 minutes on video. A focused topic such as insulin administration, fall prevention or recognizing sepsis works better than a whole body system.
The service learning plan in Week 7 needs a community partner or setting in mind; your practicum site may suggest one.
