How to Write a Liberty Integration of Faith and Learning (IFL) Essay

Integration of Faith and Learning assignments, usually shortened to IFL, appear across Liberty's School of Business courses and in some other programs. In the course guides we read, 21 of the in-scope courses list an IFL essay or paper. BUSI 520, for example, asks for two IFL essays of at least 500 words each in current APA format, each relating an assigned Scripture verse to marketing management; BUSI 536 asks for an essay of at least 800 words on how the student will integrate faith with policy and strategy theory in a business context.

What an IFL essay is for

An IFL essay asks you to think about the course's subject as a Christian professional would. It is not a devotional and it is not a business paper with a verse at the end. The grade rests on whether the faith perspective changes or deepens the analysis of the course topic.

A structure that works

IntroductionNames the course concept and the question faith speaks toAbout 15%
The conceptWhat the course teaches about the topic, with a scholarly sourceAbout 25%
The passageThe assigned Scripture (or your chosen one), read in contextAbout 25%
IntegrationHow the principle shapes a real decision in the fieldAbout 30%
ConclusionThe integrated view in a sentence or twoAbout 5%

How to integrate, not attach

Take one real decision from the field and walk it through. If the verse is about faithfulness in small things, apply it to a pricing decision where a small hidden fee would raise margin; if it is about serving others, apply it to how a manager sets targets for a sales team. Name the tension honestly: where common practice and the biblical principle pull in different directions, say what you would do and why.

Sources

Most IFL rubrics reward scholarly support for the course side of the essay: the textbook, a peer-reviewed article, or a Christian scholar who has written on business and faith. Cite Scripture with the version named the first time and list the edition in your references, as APA 7 asks.

Common reasons IFL essays lose points

  • Two halves that never meet: a page about the topic, then a page about the verse.
  • A verse used for a phrase rather than its meaning in context.
  • No business example, so the integration stays abstract.
  • Under the word minimum once the title page and references are excluded.

Questions students ask

How long is a Liberty IFL essay?

It depends on the course. BUSI 520's guide asks for at least 500 words per IFL essay; BUSI 536's asks for at least 800 words. Your Canvas instructions decide.

Does an IFL essay need sources?

Most do. Support the business concept with a scholarly source and cite Scripture in text, in current APA format.

Is IFL the same as the biblical integration in a discussion post?

They are related. A discussion integration is a few sentences inside a thread; an IFL essay makes the integration the whole assignment.
